Musica. Noa: italiani e israeliani uniti dal mare. L'intervista

(This article is also in English, scroll down for the translation) Milano Marittima compie 100 anni: per l’occasione la sera del 14 agosto nello spazio antistante lo Stadio Germano Todoli Noa e la Filarmonica Arturo Toscanini terranno un inedito concerto diretto da Ilan Mochiach. La cantante israeliana sarà accompagnata dalla chitarra di Gil Dor: il concerto, organizzato in collaborazione con Filarmonica Arturo Toscanini, Emilia Romagna Festival e Accademia Perduta/Teatro Comunale di Cervia, è intitolato “Noa Neoclassica” e presenterà in chiave sinfonica una selezione di brani dell’artista: canti tradizionali yemeniti, musica pop, ma anche le affascinanti contaminazioni contenute nell’album Noapolis. Fattitaliani l’ha intervistata.

Come avete scelto le canzon da eseguire al concerto “Noa Neoclassica”? 

Le canzoni per il concerto con l’Orchestra Toscanini appartengono a diversi album, tutte legate fra loro dalla parola “classico”. Ci saranno tutte quelle che si possono definire canzoni “classiche” di Noa, canzoni che hanno scalato le classifiche lungo i 23 anni in cui Gil Dor e io abbiamo suonato insieme, brani come: “Mishaela”, “I don’t know”, “Uri” e l’amata “Beautiful that way” da “La vita è bella”. Inoltre ci saranno alcuni classici napoletani dal nostro recente progetto “Noapolis” e alcune classiche canzoni ebraiche dal nostro lavoro sinfonico “The Israeli songbook”. Canterò anche una bella aria dal Candide di Leonard Bernstein, “Glitter and be gay”. 

Facile o difficile cantare con una così grande orchestra come la Filarmonica Arturo Toscanini?

Non è la mia prima volta con questa orchestra. Ho cantato con loro 15 anni fa! È un piacere incontrarli di nuovo. In anni recenti ho avuto molte occasioni di cantare con orchestre in giro per il mondo ed è un’esperienza davvero unica, completamente differente da quella più acustica e intima a cui sono abituata. C’è una grande bellezza nel ricco e complesso suono sinfonico e per me è una meravigliosa sfida adattarmi al loro unico senso del ritmo, lavorando certamente in stretta collaborazione con il nostro meraviglioso maestro e arrangiatore Ilan Mochiach. 

Italiani e Israeliani siamo gente mediterranea… 

Noi siamo uniti dal mare. Il mare che rappresenta sogni e speranze, che prende i migranti nel loro viaggio verso una vita migliore o forse nutre con dolore, il mare che porta navi in guerra e trasporta i pescatori al loro compito quotidiano, il mare che è sempre là nella finestra, negli uragani, in estate, in ogni alba e ogni tramonto. Io amo la gente mediterranea per il loro calore e il loro caos, la loro ricca storia e la loro bellezza, la loro profonda umanità. 

Dopo Noapolis ha altri progetti? 

Certamente. Sempre. Ma non posso parlarne ancora. Ci sto lavorando. Io non lavoro velocemente. Non voglio sprecare il tempo di nessuno con musica che non sia totalmente meritevole ai miei occhi. Io sto anche pensando di intraprendere dei percorsi diversi nel prossimo futuro… 

Guardandosi indietro, come pensa ai suoi esordi? 

Sono stata fortunata a incontrare molte ottime persone già all’inizio della mia carriera, che sono diventate la mia famiglia musicale, dal direttore musicale Gil Dor al mio manager Ofer Pesenzon, al mio agente italiano Pompeo Benincasa (tutti che lavorano con me da 20 anni e più!) a molte altre persone meravigliose. Io ho costruito grandi amicizie che sono state la mia fonte di ispirazione e di energia per molti anni e spero lo saranno in futuro. Giovanni Zambito (intervista del 13 agosto 2012).

English version How did you choice the songs for the concert of “Noa Neoclassica”? 

The songs in our concert with the Toscanini orchestra are from several different albums, all connected by their affinity to the word “classic”. There will be what you may call “classic” noa songs, songs that have stood out over the 23 years that gil dor and I have been performing together. songs like: “mishaela”, “I don’t know”, “uri” and the well loved “beautiful that way” from la vita e bella. In addition there will be some classic Neapolitan songs from our recent project “Noapolis”, and some classic Hebrew songs from our symphonic project “the Israeli songbook”. I will also sing one beautiful aria from Leonard Bernstein’s Candide, “glitter and be gay”. 

Is it easy or difficult to sing with a so big orchestra like Filarmonica Arturo Toscanini? 

This is not my first encounter with this orchestra, I performed with them 15 years ago! It is a pleasure to meet them again. in recent years I have had many chances to perform with orchestras around the world and it I a very unique experience, totally different from the more acoustic and intimate atmosphere I am accustomed to. There is great beauty in the rich and intricate symphonic sound, and for me it a wonderful challenge to adapt myself to their unique sense of rhythm, working of course in close collaboration with our wonderful maestro and arranger Ilan Mochiach. 

We are Mediterranean people… 

We are united by the sea. The sea that represents are dreams and hopes, that takes the immigrants on their journey to a better life, or maybe one filled with sorrow, the sea that brings in the war ships and carries the fisherman to their daily toil, the sea that is always there in the window, in storms, in summer, in every sunrise and sunset. I love the Mediterranean people for their warmth and chaos, their rich history and beauty, their deep humanity. 

After Noapolis have you other new projects?

Of course, always J but I cannot tell about them just yet, I am working. I do not work fast. I do not want to waste anyone’s time with music that is not totally worthy in my eyes. I am also thinking of taking some different directions in the near future… 

Looking back, how do you think about your beginning? 

I was fortunate to meet many good people early on in my career, that became my musical family, from my musical director Gil Dor, to my manager Ofer Pesenzon , to my Italian agent Pompeo Benincasa (all working with me 20 years or more!), and on to many other wonderful people, I have created great friendships that have been my source of inspiration and energy for many years and hopefully into the future.
